Summit focuses attention on economic development

A shortage of skilled workers and land for light industry were the top concerns cited by local business leaders at a countywide economic summit held in Port Townsend last week.

The event was organized by the Economic Development Council of Jefferson County.

About 100 people attended to hear government experts offer their suggestions on how to develop effective strategies for economic development.

With so many speakers packed into a one-day event, the audience had begun to dwindle a bit as a dozen local business leaders took turns talking about the challenges they face.

Of all the suggestions made about what can be done to boost economic development, the most direct came from those business people. The points they made will be discussed at the Economic Development Council board's retreat Saturday, and could become part of the organization's action plan for 2006, council Director Tamer Kirac said.
