E&P Ranks Top 30 Newspaper Sites: "Almost two-thirds of the top 30 newspaper Web site list recorded double-digit percent increases in unique traffic in July, according to the latest data from Nielsen Online.

The standout in that month: Ottaway Newspapers -- the community news arm of Dow Jones once up for sale by News Corp. That group of papers, which includes the Cape Cod (Mass.) Times, reported a gain of 167% in unique users year-over-year in July.

The Los Angeles Times grew its monthly unique traffic 66% to 8.7 million due mostly to the earthquake that shook that city at the end of July. LATimes.com went down for short bit not because of damage, but rather because too many people tried to access the site at once.

Below is the list of the top 30 newspaper Web sites provided by Nielsen. The percent change compares July 2008 uniques with July 2007 uniques. Also keep in mind there are several reasons why traffic fluctuates, including news events."

I've always found it easy to make pizza dough at home -- easy, as long as I wanted a crust that baked up thick, puffy and irregularly shaped. Forming an even, flat, thin circle of dough has been an entirely different ball of dough.

The novice status of my crust was thrown, so to speak, in my face when I picked up pizza at Pagliacci. I jealously watched staffers take just seconds to transform a ball of dough seemingly much like mine into a twirling dervish, then into a supple, flat, even, 17-inch blank palette. Americans more wired: survey | Entertainment | Industry | Reuters: "NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - About 38 percent of U.S. consumers are watching TV shows online, 36 percent use their cell phones as entertainment devices and 45 percent are creating online content like Web sites, music, videos and blogs for others, according to a new-media survey from Deloitte & Touche.
The findings of the online survey of 2,081 Americans, conducted October 25-31, were provided to The Hollywood Reporter before their official release next month.
The 'State of the Media Democracy' notes that in Deloitte's first edition of the survey just eight months earlier, 24 percent of consumers used their cell phones as entertainment devices, meaning that usage has soared 50 percent."

NYT: For the right niche, blogs can be valuable tool for marketing

To its true believers at small businesses, it is a low-cost, high-return tool that can handle marketing and public relations, raise the company profile and build the brand.

That tool is blogging, though small businesses with blogs are still a distinct minority. A recent American Express survey found that only 5 percent of businesses with fewer than 100 employees have blogs. Other experts put the number slightly higher.

But while blogs may be useful to many more small businesses, even blogging experts do not recommend it for the majority.

Guy Kawasaki, a serial entrepreneur, managing partner of Garage Technology Ventures and a prolific blogger, put it this way: "If you're a clothing manufacturer or a restaurant, blogging is probably not as high on your list as making good food or good clothes."

Blogging requires a large time commitment and some writing skills, which not every small business has on hand.

But some companies are suited to blogging. The most obvious candidates, said Aliza Sherman Risdahl, author of "The Everything Blogging Book," are consultants. "They are experts in their fields and are in the business of telling people what to do."

December 6, 2007 - (Portland, ME) - Today the Games for Health Project (www.gamesforhealth.org) announced plans for its fourth annual Games for Health Conference. The conference will be held May 8–9, 2008, at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Games for Health announced Humana has signed on as a premiere industry sponsor for the event.Prior to the conference, on May 7, the Project will also host two additional day-long events devoted to virtual worlds and health, as well as games accessibility.

Together, these three days of meetings will cover the intersection of next-generation game technologies, health, and health care. Registration is now open at www.gamesforhealth.org, and a call for content has now been issued on the site and is available to prospective speakers and presenters.

The Games for Health Project is dedicated to exploring and building on the use of games and game technologies to improve health and health care. Journalists and readers could find more respectful common ground on ethical dilemmas if we all read the same book.

It's called "How Good People Make Tough Choices" by Rushworth Kidder. I learned about it from a reader of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, ironically, because the P-I and The Seattle Times made opposite decisions on one of those tough ethical choices. About two weeks ago, the Seattle FBI asked the press to publish a photo of two men so that the public might help in identifying them. It was a rare request, and the newspapers didn't have much to go on at first.

An FBI news release said only, "These men have been seen aboard Washington State Ferries on several occasions and have exhibited unusual behavior, which was reported by passengers. While this behavior may have been innocuous, the FBI and WAJAC [Washington Joint Analytical Center] would like to resolve these reports."

...That is the way journalism should be practiced, and it is how thoughtful readers should critique the work of the media. Seeing ethical dilemmas in terms of right vs. right doesn't make them go away, but it could lead to more civil discourse about them.

Much of what is posted on Internet forums or sent in e-mail commentaries these days is shrill, mean-spirited and absolutist. Tough choices come easy for some in cyberspace.

Last Saturday, I covered the 2007 Pike Place Market Street Fair in Seattle, but arrived late due to getting the run around by the Poulsbo Farmers Market site manager.

I interviewed Hyun-Jung Jang (photo) and published around 10 video reports from the event on YouTube. Movie Maker, the free windows editing program, is getting easier to use. I'm still grooping with adding "b-roll".

This weekend I will be teaching Hyun-Jung the ropes on how to be a video reporter at the U District Farmers Market. If things go well, we will cover the Fremont Fair on the 16th.

Last week, The Stranger said that they would publish my videos on their site. Yesterday, three vids were selected from the 10 the Pike Place Market Street Fair reports and I was to remove "The Stranger" from the credits....and the production would look better if the credits were elimated all together. So, I re-edited the vids, removed the credits, and published the clips again on youtube. Hopefully, good things will happen from this point forward...

As a separate section of MySpace Video, these channels will feature content such as breaking news, original series, and animated short films. There will be no pre- or post-roll ads, product placement or corporate sponsorship of content as part of the current agreement, but the standard MySpace display advertising will run on each page.

We saw a channel on MySpace Video as an alternative way to reach people interested in the luxury lifestyle content we offer," said Joseph Varet, CEO, LX.TV. "MySpace has become a community for anyone who has a digital life online, not just young adults."

Move to 'e-paper' not a P-I plan

"Someday, Seattle P-I readers may be able to carry around their news in a bendable, electronic paper device -- but not any time soon.

The Hearst Corp., which owns the Seattle P-I, has no plans to use the Seattle daily newspaper to test a newly announced e-paper gadget, Kenneth Bronfin, president of Hearst Interactive Media, said Friday in response to a media report that said the P-I had plans to do so within two years.

A story published on the Seattle news site Crosscut.com was incorrect, Bronfin said.
'There is no doubt that we care a lot about this topic,' Bronfin said. 'We have not set any plans forward to do something in the Seattle market.'
The Crosscut story said that 'Hearst is planning to field test a version of the long-promised e-paper here in Seattle.'

Since the P-I did not have the professionalism or courtesy to talk to me before running Andrea James article on its website today, I'd like to set the record straight here.

I interviewed Ken Bronfin, head of Hearst Interactive, by phone on Tues., May 15, because I had seen a June 12, 2006 article by the Reuters news service which quoted Bronfin as saying Hearst planned to test out its e-paper device on its newspapers in Houston and San Francisco later that year. I took the precaution of taping our interview (with Bronfin's approval) last Tuesday when I asked him whether Hearst planned to also field-test its e-paper in Seattle. Here is his answer:

"I'd love to do that if possible, if we can live within the restrictions of the JOA. The answer is yes, it would make a lot of sense. It's a great market for trying this out. We've significantly improved our relationship with the Times Co. I would imagine if we did this, assuming good relations with the Times Co., they would be involved as well. Assuming relations were good, the more the merrier."

Mr. Bronfin then told me he had been back and forth between NY and Seattle a number of times. I asked how long before Hearst would be testing out its e-paper in Seattle. His answer:

"If we did something, it's still nine to 12 months away. There's still a lot of hard work to do."

A Hearst public relations man called me later to say Bronfin misspoke about the time frame and it could be up to two years before the device was tested out here in Seattle.

I also interviewed P-I Publisher Roger Oglesby about the e-paper project. He said: "The P-I has no present plans to test this device." Oglesby also added: "Anything can change. It's a technology that has potential." I then called Hearst's pr man and asked about Oglesby's statement. He said Oglesby might not be aware of all the things Bronfin's division was planning to do.

he Dixie Chicks would probably think of themselves as mothers first, then musicians.

They became accidental political figures — then they had to figure out how to reinvent themselves.

“Shut Up & Sing,” a documentary from directors Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck, follows the country trio after lead singer Natalie Maines’ offhanded on-stage comment that the group was ashamed that President Bush was a fellow Texan.

t’s not that the remark itself was shocking or even terribly provocative. But the backlash from the country music industry, from the South, from the core of the Chicks’ fan base was just stunning in its vitriol and hypocrisy. Popurls seems to be taking a Web 1.0 concept toward 2.0 sites, essentially sitting on top of the hottest information feeds and potentially taking away their traffic because you can read summaries of their items by mousing over the headlines without ever clicking through. In a move underscoring Silicon Valley's importance in the future of online entertainment, Viacom's MTV Networks on Wednesday announced a $200 million deal to acquire Internet video and gaming company Atom Entertainment in San Francisco.

With the addition of Atom Entertainment, the youth-oriented cable station picks up game sites such as Shockwave.com and AtomFilms.com, a pioneer in user-generated video. AtomFilms seeks to promote and develop new creators of online media, working almost like a talent agency to popularize sites and personalities such as JibJab, Aardman, Jason Reitman and Joe Cartoon. In June, AtomFilms had 1.6 million visitors, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The acquisition is apt to continue to fuel speculation about YouTube, the San Mateo Internet video start-up site that has become a social force in recent months with more than 100 million video views a day. For now, its founders say they are not shopping the company around.

YouTube's unpredictable amateur video may give a corporate suitor pause, at least for now, Bajarin said.

``It is a bit more of a user-created wild, wild west,'' he said. ``It's brand new. That does not mean they won't get snapped up. It's just harder for a traditional media company to see where it fits in with its overall properties.''

BETWEEN VIDEOS and video games, there's a lot of hand-wringing over how kids today have no need of imagination, no personal petri dish for creativity.

Take lonelygirl15. Oh, wait, you don't know lonelygirl? Well, while you've been sketching Fido in the parlor, lonelygirl — whoever or whatever she is — has turned YouTube into her own private playground and has achieved a level of popularity that B-list actors would crave.

See, lonelygirl seems to be like a lot of younger people who are using YouTube to post their own personal video blogs, and she's been adding her contributions to the Web site for several weeks now. She's supposedly 16, has a friend named Daniel who helps her post her video diaries, is homeschooled and apparently has some strict parents.

She has 13 entries in all. One of the best is a refutation of the Uncertainty Principle, that old quantum physics saw that says no one can truly observe the universe in its present state because it constantly changes. She does so by staring at her friend, Daniel, who's camped out and inert in her bedroom. He never moves, she stares him down and observes him the whole time, and whammo, Uncertainty Principle disproved.
Did I mention that, at age 16, I was entering radio contests and winning six-packs of Pepsi and had no idea about any Uncertainty Principle?

See, back in my generation's day, we would have watched something like lonelygirl on TV, absorbed it like sponges, and tuned in the next week. But this generation? They can look at a lonelygirl, and to continue a tortured analogy, wring the sponge out. Maybe it comes from all those years of being plunked in front of DVDs, computers and video cameras themselves: They're comfortable enough to use the same tools and turn around and create something of their own.

So even if lonelygirl's creativity isn't legit, her followers' are. They've figured out ways to not just sit and watch, but to sit and create. Lonelygirl might not exist, but rest assured, creativity does.

“It’s their fear of not being a part of it,” said Scott Vener, Mr. Lehre’s manager, who first discovered him on the video-sharing Web site YouTube, where “MySpace” became an Internet phenomenon.

Some people say that the film industry has more to fear than just being late to the party. If the Net begins spawning films — and not simply helping to market or deliver them, as has happened to date — studios’ grip on the business of putting pictures on screens may be challenged.

“Their nightmare is a direct feed from moviemaker to audience,” said Walter Kirn, a frequent contributor to The New York Times who has been serializing his novel “The Unbinding” on www.slate.com and saw one of his other novels, “Thumbsucker,” adapted to the big screen. “Their only trump cards are that they are pools of capital for making expensive things. A popular notion about bloggers is that they're pajama-wearing partisan ranters living in Mommy's basement. There they wile away their under-employed time obsessing about the latest Connecticut Senate race poll, while fancying themselves a new type of journalist, independent of government's influence and free to make up facts.

The reality of the blogosphere is a lot less partisan, a lot more diverse and nearly half female, according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Many of the nation's estimated 12 million adult bloggers -- a three-fold increase in two years -- are like Christina Palsky.

The suburban Philadelphia resident is under 30, blogs as a creative outlet and does not fancy herself a journalist. And like most bloggers, she has never published before and is more interested in sharing her life with the world than ranting about politics or popular culture. Palsky's audience is in the hundreds and, like most bloggers, she is well-educated, gainfully employed and blogs fully clothed.

"This study does unpack a lot of myths we have about bloggers," said Amanda Lenhart, a Pew senior research specialist who co-authored the study. "What it shows is that the technology is bringing a lot more voices to the national conversation. No, they might not all have the most scintillating things to say, but they are bringing a greater diversity to the dialogue."

Yahoo's media meister Lloyd Braun has stated flat out that the Sunnyvale Web portal isn't going to become an online video network to rival television.

But he's left the door open to some experiments in online broadcasting - the latest of which premiered as a test this week. Called "The 9," the show is a daily countdown of nine Web sites of interest, whether on the Yahoo network or off.

The host, Maria Sansone, is a former mtvU personality (as in MTV's college television network). Recommendations lean towards the kitchy and kooky: DancingPaul.com, a Web site where users can make a guy dance, for example.

New installments of around two minutes each are available five days a week, and are filmed by an outside producer in New York. A second Yahoo show, Hook Me Up, is available in Yahoo's personal tech area after premiering in May.

What was not clear were the circumstances behind Congdon's departure. On competing sites, Rocketboom's majority owner, Andrew Baron, said that Congdon had quit because she wanted to move to Los Angeles and that he wasn't able to meet her demands to move the video blog's production facilities there. "In late 2004, some people at Apple leaked information about a couple of the company's upcoming products to at least two websites. Since then, it's turned into a focal point for arguments about the First Amendment and what makes a journalist.

The leaked information, which was about a new audio interface for Apple's GarageBand (codename: 'Asteroid') was published on PowerPage and AppleInsider, both of which feature Apple-related news.
Apple wasn't happy about product info leaking, even if it was about a comparably minor product. It demanded to know the leakers. It sued the unknown individuals, called 'Does,' and demanded as part of the suit that the websites reveal their names.
The sites refused, so Apple took them to court. It won, at least the first round; Judge James Kleinberg of the Santa Clara County Superior Court said that the sites didn't have First Amendment protection because they published trade secrets. Apple, he ruled, could subpoena the information.
'?The United States and California Supreme Courts have underscored that trade secret laws apply to everyone regardless of their status, title or chosen profession,' he wrote.
And then the interesting part: 'The California Legislature has not carved out any exception to these statutes for journalists, bloggers or anyone else.' "

WSJ.com - Misery Begets Art -- And an Emmy Nomination: "After the success of the movie 'American Splendor', many misfits and malcontents might think their story is worthy of the big screen, but Jerry Zucker and his brother have focused on the small screen. Their site combines unusual animation with comic relief and recently garnered an Emmy nomination.

The Gimmick

Mr. Zucker lives the unassuming life of an all-American schlub. He tends to date women that aggravate his allergies. He admits that a stern remark from an unkind waitress can stir a wave of insecurity. And his list of petty grievances and personal objections is finely honed.
"I hate moths. Last summer my apartment was attacked by those flying vermin," says Mr. Zucker, 46 years old. He has turned these degradations into an animated Web site appropriately named ItsJerryTime.com, on which he battles a cast of tormentors that includes the Meal Moth, his landlord and an alleged telephone conspiracy perpetrated by a duo of old ladies.

Jerry, who has polished these seething complaints into an art form, created the cartoon character "Jerry Zucker," an online alter-ego in a cartoon series that mixes the personal style of a blog with the comic sensibility of a sitcom.

Launched in November as a collaboration with his brother, Orrin Zucker, a graphic designer with his own animation studio, the Web site now includes six installments of Jerry's mild misadventures. The action, or what passes for action, takes place either in an apartment cluttered with the nostalgic debris of his 1960s childhood or in the course of his mundane daily travels."

Networks Tout Podcasting for Promos: "Sometime this summer, Battlestar Galactica executive producer Ron Moore will sit his writing team down at an undisclosed location to begin mapping out the upcoming season of the Sci Fi Channel hit. And before the team gets started, someone will hit the record button to tape the session for a future podcast.

Moore typically records a weekly podcast and fans eat it up (2.4 million Battlestar podcasts have been downloaded to date). Witness this comment, recently posted on iTunes: ?For diehard sci-fi fans, it?s as if Gene Roddenberry called you after each original of [Star] Trek and told you what he was thinking that week.

Steve Youngwood, executive vp at Nickelodeon Digital Media, added that Nick has deliberately released podcasts for big events like the Kids Choice Awards or the recent release of the Zoey 101 movie. “We usually don’t do these things in isolation,” he said.

In terms of a business, Sci Fi’s Howe said an ad-supported model will likely evolve, though it’s early. Advertisers are watching closely, particularly video podcasts, according to Greg Smith, executive vp, director of insights, planning and data analysis at Carat Fusion. “We’re actually teaching our network people to buy video in all forms,” he said."

"In a famous medical study, scientists hooked the pleasure center of a lab rat's brain up to a self-controlled switch. The rodent practically wore out the button by repeatedly pushing it -- to the exclusion of even feeding itself.
I exhibit similar behavior whenever I go to the YouTube website. Lately, I've been compulsively clicking my mouse to rerun 'The Easter Bunny Hates You,' which, as far as I'm concerned, is 112 seconds of bliss. The short film's plot solely consists of a guy in a white bunny suit chasing down people and wailing on them with violent creativity, like forcing cellophane Easter basket grass into one victim's mouth. For a one-joke clip, its action-movie vocabulary is pitch perfect. I can't get enough.
YouTube.com doesn't always originate material like 'The Easter Bunny Hates You,' but since its start just over a year ago, the self-described 'digital video repository' has become a one-stop shop for the funny/strange ephemera of the World Wide Web."

"NEW YORK/ATLANTA (Reuters) - Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS.N: Quote, Profile, Research) ABC television network will offer some of its most popular shows, such as 'Desperate Housewives' and 'Lost,' for free on the Internet in a two-month trial, the company said on Monday.

The move was the latest effort by leading U.S. media companies to experiment with the delivery of programs through new technologies and still maintain revenue as viewership for prime-time television schedules slowly erodes.

ABC already sells digital downloads of its highest-rated TV shows for the popular iPod music and video player, while other networks have been testing online and video-on-demand formats for airing shows soon after they first appear on broadcast TV." (Read More)

WNBC Adds Second Multicast Channel: "While many of the nation?s TV stations are still prepping their first digital channel, WNBC, NBC Universal?s flagship in New York will be the first to launch a second.

“We wanted to utilize our digital tier and have another platform to make money on,” said Frank Comerford, president and general manager of WNBC, which also multicasts NBC Weather Plus. “We can either become a victim of technology or become one of the players.” Available over the air since last December, the station also recently secured carriage on Time Warner’s digital tier. In May, WNBC4.4 will also be available on Cablevision Systems’ digital tier. In total, WNBC4.4 will reach about 2.5 million homes. WNBC4.4 content will eventually be archived on WNBC.com, bringing the branding, reach and promotion of all WNBC’s digital content offerings full circle.

The second phase of the launch, in progress now, will increase the loop to 12 hours and fold in programming from the station’s content partners such as Tribeca Film Festival, Lincoln Center, MOMA, the New York Public Library and the Bronx Zoo. There are also plans to carry some shows from other NBC-owned stations that are relevant to New Yorkers, such as Wine Country and Tech Now from KNTV in San Francisco. By September, WNBC4.4 will unveil original programming, including some viewer-contributed video content, which Comerford described as “blogging for TV.”

The station is also looking for a more creative approach to advertising sales that harks back to TV’s early days when entire programs were sponsored by pursuing advertisers that want to “own” specific programming events. “We’re not relying on the 30-second model,” said Comerford. “And that may help us handle programming and advertising on the big channel.”
