"'Tiffany' throws a bouquet to the crowd watching the Seattle Pride March/Parade yesterday. Organizers said it lasted nearly four hours, attracting a record-breaking crowd of 150,000 and a record 184 entries. The huge turnout makes it more likely that the gay-pride festivities will move from Volunteer Park on Capitol Hill to Seattle Center next year, parade spokeswoman Lauri Hennessey said."

John Battelle's Searchblog: News: Google To Launch Online Video Playback Today: "I've confirmed that Monday Google will launch an in-browser video playback feature based on the open source VLC media player. This is the logical next step for Google's video search and upload function, which began taking uploads from anyone who cared to submit back in April.
Google will not disclose the raw numbers of videos that have been uploaded to date, but the company will make all those which were tagged as 'free' available for real time streaming through the VLC player, which Google has modified and will make available for download Monday morning. The company also intends to make its VLC code available to the open source community as part of their Google code project. "

"I remember when photo montages became all the rage at the Rogue Valley Mall where I grew up in Southern Oregon. You know the ones; the poster shops had just gotten over the Magic Eye fad and welcomed in a new era of novelty art, those pictures made up of thousands of tiny pictures.
I always thought I'd like to try my hand at creating one myself. But as any good procrastinator in the digital age knows, wait long enough before starting any project and some highly motivated developer will do the dirty work for you. Enter Billy Fowks.
Fowks is a Web developer who lives and works in Brooklyn, N.Y. A photographer, Fowks found a gold mine in Flickr's enormous database of photos. After seeing a Web app built using Flickr photos, Fowks was inspired to make one of his own.
The result is a neat little tool called the
Flickr Montager that lets users create those photos-made-of-photos without all the messy glue and paper scraps. After a search term is input into the tool, it searches Flickr's database for a photo with that tag. "

NOTE: It would be cool if all the online phones from each of the 2005 Summer Seattle events (Fremont Parade/Fair, Pride Parade, Bite of Seattle, Hemp Fest, etc) were made into a giant digital montage.
The publicity blunders leading up to the release of Paramount Studios' "War of the Worlds" turned into a pratfall on Thursday, when heavy security at the movie's New York premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater meant that guests had to stand in long lines to reclaim their cellphones and handbags. Even Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin and Steven Spielberg were required to check their phones, a Paramount source said.
Paramount had security guards confiscate all cellphones and handbags before the start of the movie, something the company warned about in all tickets and invitations to the screenings. (Studios have taken cellphones before but handbags seemed a new twist here.) The concern wasn't that Mr. Spielberg would be talking loudly to his agent during the quiet parts, but that people might try to capture scenes using
cellphone cameras.
"We're committed to doing everything we can to protect our films against piracy," said a spokeswoman for the studio.

Microsoft, Starbucks, Wamu among local corporate supporters
"If Microsoft Corp. was skittish about supporting gay rights legislation in Olympia, it doesn't seem to have reservations about being a sponsor in tomorrow's gay pride parade in Seattle.
More than 100 Microsoft employees, including members of the Gay and Lesbian Employees at Microsoft, are expected to march in the parade. The Redmond software company also will have a booth in Volunteer Park as part of the festivities.
And Microsoft isn't alone.
Despite boycott threats from anti-gay groups and the perception of a gay marriage backlash from the American public, corporate sponsorship of gay pride festivities held around the country this month remains strong, according to event organizers nationwide and advertising agencies that specialize in reaching gay and lesbian consumers.
From Anheuser-Busch to Bank of America, Avis-Rent-a-Car to Aetna Insurance, mainstream businesses that might have once thought twice about flying their logos alongside the rainbow flag are actively courting a market they consider beneficial, if not essential, to their bottom lines.
For many Seattle businesses, participation in the local pride parade is about acknowledging the city's residents and their customers."

Gay Pride turnout may be largest ever: "It may be the last gay pride celebration on Capitol Hill, but it'll be the biggest.
Organizers expect more than 130,000 people to attend this weekend's Seattle Pride 2005, if past trends are any indication.
'Last year I spoke to people from (the Czech Republic), Germany and then, of course, Southern California, New York, the East Coast,' said Dale Kershner, marketing director for the Seattle Pride Committee. 'People literally come from everywhere.'
The annual event -- this year is the 31st Seattle Pride -- launches tonight with a kick-off party at Timberline Spirits, 1828 Yale Ave.
Weekend festivities begin at 11 a.m. tomorrow and Sunday at Volunteer Park, where entertainment includes musical performances, Gay Bingo and an outdoor movie showing.
This year's parade (Sunday) will be the event's largest, with about 180 groups -- from Dykes on Bikes to Poodles for Pride -- marching through Capitol Hill.

When I was snapping photos out on this island during the parade, I was appoached by a guy that told me the spot was reserved for media only. When I showed him the media card on my belt, he said "only pre-registered media" was allowed.
Does anyone know anything about this?

Elia Disorder was the order of the day in Fremont yesterday as the Seattle neighborhood kicked off its 34th annual Fremont Fair with the Solstice Parade. The parade featured music, dancers like Elia Pickens, photo, and the Gira Sol samba group, costumes and the event's signature naked bicyclists.
Organizers expect between 80,000 and 100,000 people to attend the fair, which continues today. (

Naked. Hippie. Loud.
Those three words define the Fremont Summer Solstice Festival, according to an informal survey conducted by solstice parade director Monica Miller.
Now, if you talk to anyone involved in the actual parade, they'll tell you a different story. They'll tell you it's about art, community, freedom of expression. They'll also tell you that it is partially naked, pretty hippie, and definitely loud. But that's not the essence of the parade. That's not the spirit of the event.

Really, that's just the crazy naked bicyclists who precede the parade every year. They get all the press, all the hype, all the lasting impressions. People who work on the parade openly despise them.
The nude bikers take away from all the legitimate art that volunteers spend countless hours creating. With one exhibitional blow, months of hard work by solstice parade artists is knocked from our collective conscious.
Which giant wooly mammoth did you remember from last year's parade, the one made of paper mache or the one riding a ten speed?
Whichever the case, the solstice parade draws tens of thousands of gawkers every year and continues to grow and thrive in its seventeenth year of existence. (

Parade denial one thing, stereotypes quite another
This is a tale of two parades and a group of pierced performance artists who thought they'd found the perfect home in one, but were told they'd be better suited to the other.
It's also a tale of perceptions, or misperceptions, and stereotypes.
A group called PURE -- People Undergoing Real Experiences -- was recently voted out of tomorrow's Fremont Solstice Parade, despite a freakout-free precedent last year. Members were OK with the decision. They got it: Having people suspended by hooks on a pirate ship float could scare children, as well as much-needed sponsors.
What they weren't OK with is the suggestion that they'd be a better fit for the Seattle Pride Parade and that they were violent.
"We listened to NPR and it came out as, 'PURE is violent, violent to themselves.' But we told them we're clowns, we're circus people," said Xavier Frost, a member of the body modification-heavy group. "That's what made us angry. The other point they said that tops the entire cake is that they said this is a family-organized parade for the family, so why don't you take what you do and take it to the Gay Pride Parade, it would fit better with them. ... That says to us, 'They're already a subculture, they're already freaky enough, already weird.' "
Neither is the Solstice Parade, but with a reputation for nude bicyclists and giant inflatable penises, it isn't exactly a Main Street USA event.
Because PURE had already participated without incident -- and only one official complaint -- in last year's Solstice Parade, group members thought they'd finally found an accepting public platform.
"I was not under the impression that this was a kiddie parade," said Daif Hahn, one of the founders of PURE. "The whole thing is pretty much about button-pushing. Nudity is completely illegal, yet they're allowed to do it. These are not things you'd see at a normal-type parade."
PURE, which doesn't plan to march in the Seattle Pride Parade, will march tomorrow respectfully in protest -- sans suspensions -- with the blessing of the same people who voted to keep them out.

"I think a lot of people really didn't realize what was going in till we got right up next to them but then they did - I don't think they were freaking out or anything," said PURE member and float puller John Bridges, 19, a short-order cook.
"I think it was generally well received," Bridges said.

SEATTLE – Could it be one of Seattle's most famous expressions of freedom is going politically correct?
From the legendary naked bicyclists to cross-dressing clergy, the annual Fremont Solstice Parade has been the place where untraditional values were the most accepted, until now.
The Fremont Arts Council banned the act because it's not "family friendly."
A group of pierced performance artists called PURE want to march in Saturday's parade, suspended from hooks inserted through their skin.
In last year's parade they pulling their float with cables attached to hooks pierced through their flesh.
"This is based from 5,000 years of culture and tradition that happened all over the world," said Jenny Morgensen, PURE artist.
But in Fremont 2005, the normally iconoclastic Fremont Arts Council banned the act saying it wasn't "family friendly."
Members of PURE still plan to march in the parade - as an act of protest - but they say none of them will be hanging from hooks.

Fremont Parade
The Fremont Arts Council presents the largest walking PUBLIC art event in Seattle for the individuals to gather and create a Solstice celebration dedicated to building community through art. The canvas stretches from professional artists, and performers to community groups, schools and individuals creating beautiful, funny, satirical and often unexpected objects and performances.

Just about everyone in Fremont has helped or participated in the Fremont Fair in one way or another - it is truly a grass-roots community celebration and a product of all we know and love about the spirit of Fremont.
The Fremont Public Association (FPA) took over stewardship of the fair a few years after it's inception. FPA is also the beneficiary of revenue generated by the fair. During the first few years of FPA producing the fair, people were asked to bring canned food to help restart the Fremont Food Bank, which was relocating from the basement of the Fremont Baptist Church, or aluminum cans, to help launch the FPA's curb-side recycling efforts.
Many years later, FPA has grown to one of the largest human service agencies in the city, with almost 30 programs serving low-income individuals and families throughout Seattle, King County and beyond. http://

Fremont Parade 2004 - That has gotta hurt (they are pulling a float)
"Apparently not everything goes at the Fremont Solstice Parade.
Organizers of the annual parade with nude bicyclists, and last year a giant inflatable penis, have decided that people pulling a float with a chain hooked to their piercings goes too far.
They've banned a group that marched last year from making a reappearance in Saturday's parade -- this time dressed up as pirates with two people suspended on a pirate ship float from hooks in their skin.
The debate over the group, People Undergoing Real Experiences, has pitted those concerned about limiting the freedom of expression in a neighborhood that so values its uniqueness it has a giant statue of Lenin against those worried about freaking people out.
Monica Miller, the parade's director, said board members of the Fremont Arts Council, which runs the parade, made the decision in a 7-2 vote during an emergency meeting Saturday after failing to reach a consensus." (
